Narwal Freo X Ultra
A top-rated, highly-functional Gen 4 robot vacuum and mop that takes a fresh approach to design, the Freo X Ultra is a well-built machine. The price of $1,400 is hard to swallow, but you can find it on sale often enough to make it more palatable. The unit is stunning and the base occupies very small space in the corner of your home.
The design of this robot addresses the issues we've faced with other robotic mops and vacuum cleaners, such as brushes that get caught in hair, and the vacuum brush not being able to reach the bare flooring underneath furniture. The sweeping performance is impressive on carpets and flooring. The vacuum/mop features a high level debris pickup and the mop will quickly soak up bare floors.
The mops use a smart system that cleans along the edges of walls, and around furniture. The robot is able to avoid the bulkier obstacles like toys, food bowls, shoes, and backpacks without any difficulty. However, it could get stuck or get caught up in smaller and less hefty objects like shoelaces, USB cables and pen.
We used this robot to clean and mop a mix of pile carpet tiles, FLOR carpet, and hardwood floors within a large, open floor plan. With FREO Mind enabled, it cleaned and mopped the 90m2 area in about 170 minutes, which is close to average for Gen 4.
The robot is distinguished by its numerous characteristics. Freo X Ultra is equipped with numerous enhancements in software, sensors and hardware to keep it ahead of its class. It promises 3.5 hours of autonomy in areas up to 260m2.
Freo's application lets you customize multiple functions, including how often the robot comes back to the base station. You can also alter the frequency of mopping as well as the power level (silent, intelligent) or the mopping humidity. The app is able to detect areas that are heavily soiled and design a clean route, and dispense detergent or raise the pads on carpet.
Other notable features include a quick charging battery, an easy-to-read display on the robot's bottom and a handy dock door that opens easily. The Freo X Ultra vacuum and mop is a great choice for homeowners and apartment dwellers who wish to cut down on chores and keep their home clean.
Miele Scout RX3
Miele is not a slouche in the world of robotic vacuuming and is renowned for quality and technological innovation. The new Miele robot is designed to take it to the next level by incorporating high-end features and superior cleaning performance.
The RX3 features a dual-suction system smart mapping system that includes 3D mapping, and a camera which transmits an image in real-time to your smartphone. Its powerful four-stage cleaning system ensures excellent dust removal on hard and carpet floors, while intuitive side brushes with a swing-out feature and two suction channels clean in corners. Its 8.5 cm height allows it to reach under low furniture. Front cameras and an infrared sensor assist in navigating barriers, thresholds and obstacles with ease.

The Scout RX3 impressed us in our test on how well it cleaned baking powder near corners and baseboards. Its 2,500Pa suction was weaker than other robots, but it was still quiet and swift in its movements. It didn't mop, and its clean pad was a challenge to attach. It also wasn't able to handle dried-on dirt.
The app is on the basic side and lacks features such as multiple cleaning modes and automated scheduling. It does support Alexa, but its voice controls aren't very intuitive or responsive. Also, it's a bit unreliable when it comes getting back to the charging station after a run other robots are able to trace a previous path or follow a wall until they get to their destination however the RX3 simply bumbles around until it quits and sends a message of failure to your phone.
Another issue we encountered was with its smart features, particularly the mapping function and digital keep-out zones. It was great at keeping our furniture legs and shoes away however it could easily get hanging up on cables, socks and carpets. That's the reason we didn't choose to include it in our Best Buy list. Still, with a decent price tag and impressive performance, the Scout RX3 is worth considering if you're looking for a smarter alternative to traditional uprights.
